World Giraffe Day at Seneca Park Zoo is celebrated on June 21. The event aims to raise awareness and funds for giraffe conservation. The zoo, which is home to three Masai giraffes—Kipenzi, Iggy, and Olmstead—hosts various activities to educate visitors about these animals. Guests can meet with zoo docents and naturalists to learn about giraffes' unique adaptations and their role in their ecosystem. The event also includes opportunities to feed the giraffes, participate in animal enrichment activities, and support conservation efforts.
The zoo partners with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) to support conservation projects in Africa, including habitat protection, anti-poaching activities, and research. Seneca Park Zoo has contributed over $20,000 to the GCF since the giraffes have been there. The zoo also participates in the Giraffe SAFE Program, a collaboration of AZA-accredited zoos aimed at maximizing their impact on giraffe conservation.
During World Giraffe Day, visitors can engage in fun and educational activities while supporting a critical cause. The event is part of the zoo's broader conservation efforts, which include breeding programs and species survival plans to ensure the long-term health of giraffe populations.
